Take time away from the rush of everyday life and work slowly through nine detailed Roman mosaic patterns.

This is more than a colouring pack. As you colour each individual tessera—the small pieces that make up a mosaic—you begin to follow the lines, strands, turns and interweaving that make Roman geometric mosaics so satisfying to look at.

The process is calm, absorbing and practical: you are creating your own coloured version of each design while learning how the original mosaic pattern is put together.

These are not generic “Roman-inspired” designs. The patterns are taken from Roman mosaics, and the original illustrations were drawn tessera by tessera by Lawrence Payne. They have been prepared as printable A4 PDF sheets so you can work through them at your own pace.

• A PDF showing each pattern in colour, so you can see the complete design.
• A PDF showing the key black tesserae already coloured in, making it easier to identify and follow the strands.

How it works

For many of the interwoven patterns, begin by colouring the black tesserae. Then look for their partner lines elsewhere in the design and follow the repeated strand gradually. You do not need to complete a whole line at once: working in small sections helps the structure reveal itself.

You can use the colour-reference sheets for ideas, follow them exactly, or choose your own colour combinations. The intention is not simply to fill spaces; it is to start seeing how the pattern connects and repeats.

The pack’s instructions are built around this approach: identify the black lines, count the tesserae across a strand, look for the matching line, and use the central turning points to work out the rest of the design.
