Roman mosaics - how to make them,
draw them, understand them.
Create Roman-style geometric mosaics with 11 printable PDF patterns in both 10mm (3/8") and 5mm (3/16") tesserae sizes.
This collection includes planometric designs, interwoven hearts, and Solomon’s knot patterns. Each design comes with guidance on transferring the pattern to your baseboard, suggested colours, and estimated tesserae quantities to help you plan your materials.
Designed to be made, not just printed. These are practical mosaic patterns prepared with tesserae placement in mind. The accompanying notes explain the order of work, line direction, repetition, perspective, and suggested cuts, drawing on my experience making and teaching Roman-style mosaics. These are digital PDF files. Nothing will be posted. Print the pattern you need, transfer it to your baseboard, and begin creating.
The 10mm versions are the easiest place to start. The 5mm versions allow for smaller, more detailed mosaics but require smaller tesserae and more cutting.
Suitable for mosaic makers who want ready-to-use Roman geometric designs without having to draw the patterns themselves.

Learn Roman Mosaics series manual
I so enjoyed working on the one I had tiles for. The instruction book in itself was worth the money I spent. I spent 200AU on a mosaic class and didn’t learn most of what was in that book.

Who is Lawrence Payne?
Ever since I started this journey in 2002 I have been constantly looking for evidence of how those ancient mosaicists worked. I've gone over the mosaics and in making copies I feel I have a greater understanding of those craftsmen. Now I want to give you the chance to do this work for yourself.
Making small mosaics is no different from working on a full floor, you use the same method, the same outlook.
