In-person workshop with everything supplied and held at:
The Wesley Hall
11 School Rd, Elmswell, Bury St Edmunds, IP30 9EEExperience the art of creating Roman mosaics in this foundation course. Perfect for beginners and also those with experience who want an experience in a classical discipline. This day-long workshop will introduce you to the techniques used by ancient craftsmen to create your own mosaic.
During the workshop, you will learn the fundamental techniques of mosaic making, including how to cut and shape tiles, how to lay them out, and how to grout and finish your piece (grouting is done at home, I demonstrate). You will be guided through the process step-by-step, ensuring that you feel comfortable and confident in your abilities.
In addition to learning practical skills, you'll also discover the historical context behind mosaic making. You'll be fascinated to learn about the origins and development of mosaic art in ancient civilizations. You'll get to make a copy of a Roman mosaic, an art style that is renowned for its intricate designs and bold colors.
At the end of the day, you'll have the satisfaction of completing your own stunning mosaic piece. You'll be amazed at what you can create in just one day, and you'll have a unique piece of art to take home and display proudly.
Not only is this workshop a fantastic opportunity to learn a new craft, but it's also a chance to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for ancient history and crafting. You'll have the chance to share your work with others and to learn from them, making new friends and memories along the way.
We understand that cost and materials can be concerns for some participants, which is why I'll give you a complete rundown on continuing this craft and how to get the materials you need whatever your budget.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn a new skill, make new friends, and create a beautiful piece of art to take home. Book your spot in our one-day mosaic workshop today!

What previous customers have said;
Pattern commission
Recently I had a client who wanted a custom commission incorporating several Roman mosaic patterns. Since my training is not in the geometry of these specialized motifs, I went directly to the Master Lawrence Payne.
Lawrence saved me weeks of work trying to figure out and design these patterns on my own. He has spent years upon years studying these specialized techniques and actually designed the patterns specifically to the tesserae size I was using.
Though I haven’t yet found the time to study with him, I highly recommend taking advantage of his expertise gleaned from years of study, trial and error. Through his years of investment he’s already made the mistakes and adjustments to these techniques for you and passes this directly on to you. He is the Master!

Learn Roman Mosaics series manual August 2019
I so enjoyed working on the one I had tiles for. The instruction book in itself was worth the money I spent. I spent 200AU on a mosaic class and didn’t learn most of what was in that book.
Museum Guide
Lawrence Payne, I just read your e-book about Roman Mosaics--I learned so much! I love the clarity of the explanations, drawings and images--it is a treasure! I'm so glad I signed up for your newsletter!

Who is Lawrence Payne?
Ever since I started this journey in 2002 I have been constantly looking for evidence of how those ancient mosaicists worked. I've gone over the mosaics and in making copies I feel I have a greater understanding of those craftsmen. Now I want to give you the chance to do this work for yourself.
Making small mosaics is no different from working on a full floor, you use the same method, the same outlook.
